Vlad finished eighth grade, a very exciting moment for me. I think for him too, eventually. I realized that even though we put some distance between us, the beautiful community we formed nine years ago would fall apart.
I enjoyed seeing the ladies (and gentlemen) with whom I raised Vlad, organized events, joined the kids for homework and picnics, sports, birthdays, at my house or theirs. When we needed it we were there for each other. I was so lucky.
Vlad has been preparing for the exam for two years, with tutoring and other useful tips from us. It has been a difficult time for him and for us. I support him from afar as best I can. I have been looking for ideas on how I can support him even before the exam and I want to share them here:
- Encourage him to go to bed on time and get up early so that at exam time, 9:00, he is clear-headed and focused on what he has to do. The body likes routine, the brain gets used to a rhythm and this will ensure that he can perform to his full potential.
- Get out for some light outdoor exercise to relax and oxygenate your brain so that you have the resources to concentrate on the exam.
- Prepare a nutritious meal, so make sure he’ll be physically fit without stomach aches from food that didn’t go down well.
- Food supplements also help. Substances that have been shown to be effective in improving memory capacity include: ginseng, Omega fatty acids, vitamins B6 and B12, lecithin, Gingko biloba, magnesium.
- Make sure you know the exam start time, location and which means of transport will take you to the exam. Equally important is the subject matter so that you can prepare your writing materials or whatever else you need as aids.
But most important of all is to assure him, whatever the outcome, of your support and love. Reassure him that things will work out exactly as they should and that the path he is about to take is his.
Good thoughts to all who are preparing to support your children for the exam and trust that things are going in the right direction for you and your child!
